How to care for your real Christmas tree
- Keep your Christmas tree watered and hydrated. Check the water level every day.
- Don’t add anything to the water that you feed your Christmas tree. Plain tap water is perfectly acceptable.
- Avoid overwatering your Christmas tree. 2 pints of water a day should be ok for the first week, and then gradually reduce this.
- Clear space in your room before you set up your Christmas tree and decorate it.
- Never put your Christmas tree near open flames and sources of heat. Your tree can dry out or even catch fire if it is too close to heat sources.
- In the location of your Christmas tree, cover the floor with a cloth or tarpaulin, to soak up any water spillages.
- If you are decorating your Christmas tree with lights, place your tree near a plug socket.
- Don’t overload your tree with too many electrical lights- as these are a fire hazard.
- Remember to turn off any electric lights on your Christmas tree when you leave the house, to prevent the tree from drying out.
- Store your Christmas tree in a cool, dry place, when you are not using it. Don’t just place it outside- the tree may not withstand extreme temperatures or weather conditions.
- Make sure your Christmas tree stand can hold the amount of water that your tree needs.
- When you take down your Christmas tree, carefully empty out the tree stand, being careful not to spill any water on the floor.
- When it is time to dispose of your Christmas tree, check with your local recycling centre to see if the tree can be chipped.
